Hi! I’m Shannon! I’m a personal essayist, reporter, and culture critic, as well as a sometimes artist/jeweler. I write a twice-monthly newsletter about my life as a married 30something American lesbian living in Liverpool, England, as well as things I’ve watched and read.

Before becoming a full-time freelance writer and (re)launching this newsletter in early 2023, I spent nearly 8 years at BuzzFeed News, where I was first in charge of our LGBTQ coverage, then a pop culture and politics generalist for the culture desk. One of my most-read essays at BFN was about meeting my now-wife Lynette on a lesbian cruise.

I’m interested in subjects like the increasingly unclear boundaries between artist and influencer, childism and children’s rights, the fall of white girlboss millennial feminism, intergenerational trauma and abuse, social media, journalism’s identity crisis, pop culture and the failure of the nuclear family, and when your self-worth is tied to your work.

All subscribers to this newsletter will receive the occasional free essay focused on movies, books, politics, or internet/lifestyle trends: big-picture criticism. My more personal writing, including the juicier stuff (petty complaints; the ups and downs of married life; family stuff; money stuff; crushes; gossip; shameful revelations) will mostly be saved for paid subscribers’ posts. Many of these essays will include a special section by wife, Lynette’s Comment Corner, in which she provides her own view on our life together.

If you’re not in a position to afford the subscription fee right now, please do reach out to me—I’m happy to gift anyone a free paid subscription, no questions asked.

But for those of you who haven’t yet exhausted your newsletter budget and can spare a few bucks to directly support my work, I’d be so grateful if you’d consider signing up for less than the cost of a pint of decent beer per month.

You can find me at @skeatings on Twitter, Tiktok, and Instagram.

Thank you for being here!! Truly.
